assemblage

My art is about seeing things, acquiring and re-imagining a wide variety of objects, functional and non, organic, inorganic, all shapes and sizes. My relationship to these objects and the ideas they generate form the basis of my assemblage work, allowing both their original function and my use of them to convey meaning through a visual narrative. The resulting artwork takes different forms influenced by the materials at hand. With each piece I strive to tell a story about the connections I see within nature, science and human history, mind, body, and spirit. A WORD ABOUT FOVs = Found Object Vessels FOVs were an early exploration in functional design inspired by a gift of old laboratory glass and a love of Japanese Ikebana flower arranging.  I was interested in combining the laboratory glass with organic and inorganic materials to create a functional and thought provoking piece of art that gave new life to unwanted things. I made each FOV as a private altar to nature and the passage of time. They were and continue to be unique vessels for flowers (alive or dried) and cuttings.
